Maryland’s Department of Natural Resources (DNR) included a view of the pond at Pocomoke River State Park’s Shad Landing in its October 22 foliage report. Photographed on October 21 by the park’s Janet Heaton, the scene shows yellow leaves, still-green canopy and trees turning brown, their colors reflected in the water. It records a lowland Eastern Shore autumn, different from the foliage season in the mountains.

Watching Autumn Change Around the Pond

The report placed Garrett and Allegany counties in western Maryland at peak color, with central areas moving from midpoint toward peak. It did not assign Shad Landing a separate percentage of color change or a peak date. A documented touch of autumn along the water should therefore not be taken to mean the entire park had reached peak foliage. The mixture of lingering green and yellow from tree to tree is itself the character of this observation.

The park describes marked walking trails around the Shad Landing Nature Center. Trail of Change is a 0.75-mile loop for exploring vegetation and the waterside landscape. Access is from the marina parking lot; waterproof footwear is recommended because parts of the trail can be wet. Across the river, Milburn Landing has the Bald Cypress Trail and the 3.7-mile Milburn Landing Trail, so be sure to choose the correct entrance and parking area.

Camping Loops Have Different Closing Dates

The official reservation system’s 2026 schedule lists Shad Landing’s Acorn Trail, Robin’s Nest and Water’s Edge camping loops as open year-round. Blue Heron’s season runs through October 31 and Deer Run’s through December 12. Fox Den’s season ended September 6. Nanticoke at Milburn Landing is also listed through December 12. Being in the same state park does not make every loop available on the same dates.

Shad Landing has electric sites and a dump station. Camping equipment and vehicles must fit within the reserved site’s pad and access space; check individual sites for length, electricity and pet rules. Shad Landing is at 3461 Worcester Hwy., Snow Hill, MD 21863, with access from Route 113. Milburn Landing uses a separate entrance at 3036 Nassawango Rd., Pocomoke City, MD 21851. Day use runs from sunrise to sunset; use the official reservation site for overnight bookings and availability.

Before departure, recheck the marina construction notice. The park describes the Shad Landing marina improvements as being in final design review, with construction expected in 2026 and possible access restrictions in fall, but the notice reviewed did not give a confirmed closure schedule. It should not be read as proof that access was already closed. Park canoe and kayak rentals are listed as a seasonal service from Memorial Day through Labor Day, so do not assume rentals will be available in late fall.
