RV travelers visiting Crater Lake needed to consider cold temperatures and seasonal closures before the October 28 forecast’s clear skies. NWS forecast a high of 36°F and low of 24°F near the lake at 6,775 feet. This was a time to distinguish a daytime lake-view visit from plans to stay overnight inside the park.
Areas Affected
Updated at 4:41 a.m. PDT October 28, the forecast called for mostly sunny daytime conditions, west-southwest winds of 13–15 mph and gusts to 22 mph. Clouds were expected to increase overnight as westerly winds shifted northeast. October 29 was forecast at 38°F by day and 23°F overnight, with subfreezing cold returning after daylight.
NPS conditions updated October 27 listed North Entrance Road, East and West Rim Drive, Cloudcap Road and Pinnacles Road as closed. The summer route entering from the north and circling the lake was unavailable. Visiting plans needed to center on Highway 62 from the west or south.
The 7-mile Munson Valley Road from Highway 62 to Rim Village was listed as open, but this year-round-maintained road can close temporarily during snowfall. Its final 3 miles include steep grades and sharp curves. A sunny forecast did not reopen closed rim roads or establish that every road surface was dry.
What RV Travelers Need to Know
Mazama Campground was listed as closed for winter. Its official operator also identified September 30 as the last overnight date of 2026. Lost Creek Campground was closed in the NPS conditions report as well, so RV travelers should not depart expecting to camp inside the park. Confirm operating dates and vehicle capacity separately at accommodations outside it.
Finish fuel planning before arriving. NPS reported the park’s gas pumps closed, with gas available 29 miles west of the South Entrance station in Prospect or 30 miles south at Crater Lake Junction Travel Center on Highway 97. Assuming fuel could be bought inside the park after sightseeing could add considerably to the drive.
Before leaving, check NPS road conditions alongside Oregon transportation officials’ TripCheck. NPS notes that the park is a snow zone and may be subject to winter chain or traction-tire rules. The October 28 forecast extended through November 3, but on-the-day access remained governed by actual restrictions and current road notices.
