RV travelers approaching the Tennessee side of Great Smoky Mountains National Park on Friday, November 6, face an early visibility problem before a cooler weekend. The National Weather Service issued a dense fog advisory at 5:26 a.m. EST, scheduled to last until 9 a.m. EST, for a broad area that includes Gatlinburg, Elkmont and Cades Cove.
The advisory warns of visibility below a quarter-mile, especially in valleys and near waterways. For anyone leaving a campground early, the agency’s guidance is to slow down, use headlights and increase following distance. Its accompanying statement specifically recommends low-beam headlights.
A sunny Friday, then lower weekend temperatures
The NWS point forecast two miles south-southeast of Gatlinburg, at about 2,972 feet, calls for sunshine and a high near 60°F on Friday. A 20 percent chance of showers is forecast before midnight, followed by a low near 43°F.
Saturday should become sunny after a partly sunny start, with a high around 51°F. Saturday night falls to about 38°F before a sunny Sunday reaches roughly 56°F. These figures apply to the listed mountain forecast point, not every valley campground or higher summit.
The forecast was updated at 6:06 a.m. EST on November 6. Travelers setting out later should check whether the morning fog advisory has expired or been extended and obtain the forecast for their actual campsite and route.
Confirm the campsite before driving into the park
The National Park Service identifies Cades Cove and Smokemont as year-round campgrounds; the others operate seasonally. Advance reservations are required, and camping is limited to designated campsites rather than pullouts or parking lots. An open campground does not establish that a suitable RV site is available.
Most park camping is without utility hookups. NPS says only some Look Rock sites offer electric and water hookups, while the small outlets at Cades Cove, Elkmont and Smokemont are for medical equipment only. That makes battery capacity and an appropriate overnight heating plan worth checking before arrival.
Choose a confirmed site that fits the rig, check current park road conditions, and leave enough daylight for setup. The forecast’s chilly Saturday night is a planning consideration even though this point forecast remains above freezing.
