The Missouri Department of Conservation’s October 23 foliage report classified the Ozarks around Eminence and West Plains as still changing. Yellow and orange hickories and red maples appeared among green pines and oaks. The department also included Big Spring, south of Van Buren, among the springs worth visiting that week.

A Forest Changing at Different Speeds

Even within the same region, species and growing conditions affect the pace of change. The report described hickories turning yellow and orange, some walnuts nearly bare, and maples showing red. Dry autumn weather had left some oak leaves crisp and brown. Rather than a forest reaching peak color all at once, the more accurate picture was a landscape displaying several stages together.

At Big Spring, short walks can focus on the spring and nearby Current River. The campground lies about 4 miles south of Van Buren along Missouri Route 103. An October 23 regional observation did not guarantee peak foliage on a particular trail on October 27. Recheck official local notices and road conditions before departure.

Check Camping Dates Alongside Winter Facilities

NPS describes Big Spring as a year-round campground with electric and nonelectric sites; camping requires a Recreation.gov reservation. When checked October 27, the calendar showed availability October 27–29 at some sites in Loops 100 and 200, but marked those same sites with a C for closed October 30–November 1. Year-round operation does not mean every site is open on the intended dates. Enter the actual arrival and departure dates to check.

Electric hookups are in Loop 200, but sites have no water or sewer hookups. Official reservation information describes winter operation for most water spigots and restrooms from October 15 through April 14, with Big Spring’s heated showers and flush toilets listed as exceptions. Do not assume RV water filling will be available. NPS winter rates for October 16–April 14 are $10 per night for nonelectric sites and $20 for electric sites. Check individual site information for RV and trailer length limits.

Distinguish closures when visiting other springs nearby. NPS information listed the Round Spring spring and pavilion parking area as closed for bridge reconstruction for the remainder of 2026. Alternative access was directed to the northern trail near group sites 4–8. Akers Ferry on State Route K was out of service until further notice, and park paving notices also remained in effect. Check NPS closures and the reservation calendar immediately before visiting.
