[Oregon] Dense Fog Slows Willamette Valley Travel as Champoeg Keeps Year-Round Camping

Dense fog is the immediate travel concern for RVs crossing the Willamette Valley on Sunday morning. A National Weather Service advisory remains in effect until 10 a.m. PST November 1, including Newberg, Wilsonville, Woodburn and Salem. Travelers heading toward Champoeg State Heritage Area should leave room in their schedule for poor visibility rather than judge the drive by the sunnier afternoon forecast.

Areas Affected

The advisory covers several valley and Portland-area zones, with visibility of a quarter mile or less possible. At nearby Aurora State Airport, the 4:53 a.m. PST observation reported fog and quarter-mile visibility. That is an airport observation, not a measurement at every campsite or highway exit.

The forecast point near Champoeg, 5 miles east-southeast of Dundee, was updated at 4:41 a.m. PST November 1. It calls for areas of dense fog before 11 a.m., then gradual clearing and a high near 55°F. Patchy frost is forecast before 7 a.m. The advisory ending at 10 a.m. does not promise that every patch of fog will disappear at that moment.

Sunday night brings another forecast of patchy fog after 2 a.m. and frost after 3 a.m., with a low around 34°F. Monday is expected to remain cloudy after morning fog, with a high near 53°F. A later departure may help with visibility, but a clear Sunday afternoon should not be taken as Monday morning’s road condition.

What RV Travelers Need to Know

Champoeg provides a year-round overnight option, but its loops do not all follow the same calendar. Oregon State Parks lists B Loop, cabins, yurts and the RV meeting hall as open year-round, while A Loop closes seasonally. Check the specific site in the reservation system before making the park a planned stop; year-round operation does not establish that a suitable site is vacant.

The park lists full-hookup sites and electric sites with water, plus a dump station and camper showers. Match the chosen site to the rig and the services needed, rather than assuming every space includes sewer. For navigation, the park specifies its physical entrance address as 8239 Champoeg Rd NE, Saint Paul, OR 97137, which differs from its business mailing address.

Before leaving Interstate 5 or another valley approach, review Oregon’s TripCheck road information and the updated NWS advisory. Slow down and increase following distance where fog reduces visibility. Once parked, the paved river-area trails offer a different pace from driving, but morning fog can also make walkers and cyclists harder to see near campground roads.
